Supporting Island-Wide Customs Closure Operations: Core Tube Structure of Hainan's Tallest Tower Topped Out

information sources:

On December 16, the core tube structure of the Hainan Center project (Haikou Tower), known as the tallest tower in Hainan and designed by IPPR, was successfully topped out, marking the formal completion of its main structure. The structure has now reached a height of 402 meters, redefining Hainan's urban skyline. Zhang Xiangrong, Deputy General Manager of IPPR, attended the topping-out ceremony.

Hainan Center is a supertall skyscraper invested and developed by Hainan Airport, a subsidiary of Hainan Holdings. With a building height of 428 meters and a total floor area of approximately 391,000 m2, it is currently the tallest supertall building in the world located within an 8-degree (0.3g) high seismic fortification zone. It is also recognized as one of the most structurally complex and technically challenging supertall buildings globally. The topping-out, achieved at a critical stage as the province advances its island-wide customs closure operations, marks a decisive milestone in the project.

The tower adopts a structural system combining a mega-braced frame core tube with outrigger trusses, offering key advantages such as high stiffness, strong stability, and superior wind resistance. The project has undergone a series of critical tests, including earthquake shaking table simulations, wind tunnel testing, pile foundation load testing, seismic performance testing of key nodes, and load testing of major components. Based on test data, design parameters were verified and optimized to enhance the tower's lateral force resistance. During the direct impact of Super Typhoon "Yagi" in 2024, the structure withstood Level 17 winds, providing real-world validation of the scientific rigor, safety, and reliability of its design.

After the project is put into operation, it will integrate multiple functions, including high-end business, international hospitality, and culture and tourism, thereby elevating the city's development capacity and enriching its service industry ecosystem. It will further enhance the sense of pride and well-being among the people of Hainan, inject strong momentum into the high-quality development of the Hainan Free Trade Port following island-wide customs closure, and serve as a key landmark supporting industrial upgrading and greater openness to the outside world.
